Wally's Journey

Wally hasn’t been born yet so he does not know his journey is about to began even before he is hatched. As Mommy Duck sets on her nest, the rain is coming down harder and harder but she is secure in the bushes just off the pond. She checks her three little eggs to make sure they are nice and warm. Then she hears it!  The big dozer is pushing dirt closer and closer to her little nest, luckily for her the eggs are small and she can carry them inside her bill, she takes one and comes back for the other as fast as she can, but as she comes back for the third egg, it is no where to be found, it is covered with dirt. She flies round and round but no egg. She then knows it is gone forever, her little baby duck. She goes off to keep the other two warm and safe.

The dozer man did not see the nest of baby ducks but he did see the pond and he covered it with dirt and filled it in. The pond is warm and the steam is still coming up from it. Wally is being tossed and turned but he is all nice and warm inside the pond covered with dirt so he does not know what is going on. He knows it's about time for him to come out of the shell and he is all excited about seeing his mother and his brothers and sisters.

Serria is sitting in the living room just looking out of the window, she sees the Duck flying round and round, she watches it and she is concerned. "Mommy can I go outside" she asked? "No", said her Mother. "It's still raining, after it stops you can". She sat there and just watched, finally it flew away. As soon as the rain stopped, she put her little boots on and her rain coat and off she went.  The pond was gone but there was something white sticking up from where it used to be, she stepped a little closer to look as she reached for it. She sank up to her knees and she screamed for help. Her brother Dawson had gone to check on her. When he saw her, he grabbed her by the coat and started pulling. Serria hung onto the egg. Dawson screamed for Mom. She heard him yelling, she was feeding Shanna. Mom grabbed Shanna out of her chair and headed for the pond. She handed Shanna to Dawson and grabbed Serria and ran for the house. Serria was covered with mud, she looked so funny but Mom wasn’t laughing. "Honey", she said you could have fallen in deeper and gotten hurt.  Don’t go out there anymore". Then she saw it. "What is that honey, what have you got?" Serria reached it to her Mom. "It's an egg Mommy" she said, "a duck egg. I saw the Mommy flying round and round but she couldn’t save her baby". Dawson looked at the egg and he put Shanna down. Shanna ran for the egg, "Ball" she said, "play ball."   "No!" screamed Serria "its not a ball baby it's an egg with a tiny duck in it."  Dawson said we have to keep it warm or it will die". Serria begged Mom, "Please!" she said "let me keep it, Please?"  Mom said "okay, but with Dawson’s help and you have to put it where Shanna can’t reach it."

Serria got a shoe box and put some cloth in it and put it up high to wait for the little egg to hatch. She watched it every day. "Mommy why did daddy have to fill the pond and tear down all our trees?"  "Well," Mom said, "because Daddy wants to clear some land and make the pond bigger so it will hold more ducks, he didn’t know there were any ducks left out there, most of them have all flown south for the winter. We will have more room for more ducks when the pond is bigger."

Serria is watching the little egg and she sees in it a small crack. Wally looks through the crack and he sees a face with a big smile on it. He knows it's about time. He's getting to big for this little shell. He squirms and squirms and then it happen, he's out! He is so tiny. Serria gets a bigger box and day after day she watches him grow.

It's summer now and it's time to take him out side. Dawson takes him to the barn and goes to the hay loft.  He knows Wally has wings but he's never seen him spread them. He goes to the open door on the loft and lets Wally out. Into the air he went and then down, into the large stack of hay at the bottom. Serria starts screaming..."No, Dawson hes not ready yet."  Serria made some wings but she made them out of Dawsons favorite kite. He was real upset so he told her he would help her, and Dawson made paper wings and each of them took turns jumping from the hay loft with Wally in their arms trying to show him. Wally is just happy to be playing with them, he has no intention of flying. It looks kinda scary to him, so far up like that. One day they couldn’t find Wally but they heard him quacking and then they heard a splashing noise, he had fallen in the camode, he had wanted to play in the water and the lid had come down on him, he was so funny looking but as he flapped his wings trying to get out Serria saw them, four little black feathers, they were so pretty but they were under his wings.

Wally does not quite know what he is, then one day he was sitting by the window in a little mesh cage because after the little camode thing they thought it was best and safe for him, he heard a noise, it was a quacking noise just like the noise he makes. He then realized he is a duck, but where is his Mommy? Why does she not come and get him? He is happy with Serria and Dawson but he wants his real Mommy. How will he know who his Mommy is?

The ducks are coming for the pond again because Dad replaced it with a larger one for the ducks to land in and rest. There is a funny looking duck on the pond it has four black feathers in its wing. Serria looks at Wally and she knows he is sad. "I don’t know who your Mommy is Wally", she says "but I will take you out there and maybe she will know you." Serria takes Wally out to the pond, the ducks fly away all except the one with the black feathers. She then remembers Wallys black feathers and she let Wally go. He walks toward the pond wiggling his little tail feathers, the Mommy duck knows her baby, she flaps her wings and shows her black feathers and Wallys flaps his and showed his black feathers, he flapped so hard he lifted him self up in the air and the more he flapped the higher he got and him and his Mommy flew away. Every year about the same time Wally comes to the pond with the rest of the ducks but he sits while Serria and Dawson talk to him and feed him. He is one happy duck for sure.
