The Corn Crib The corn crib was at Aunt Serrie’s. She lived in a place called, Pounding Mill Branch, it was called that because there was a little branch running down the mountain in just about everyone's yard. Now the corn crib, it was out in front of the house and open in the middle. It had two sides to it and all the corn was stored there. We kids would love to go there but we were really scared because our Grandmother told us you could fall through the corn and smother to death and no one would find you for days. It smelled so good, we would watch the men gather the corn and shoot it into the bins. We would go sometimes and just get some out and pop the corn off for the fun of it. If I remember right I think we still played in it and we did not die or smother to death, not saying we could not have. Aunt Serrie told us if we wanted to be helpful, we could put some in buckets and feed the pigs. We asked her what happen to the pigs when they got big and she told us she ate them for breakfast. We would go to the pigs and talk to them and cry and tell them she was going to eat them, they didn’t seem to care. It was real hard after that to eat bacon and ham but we managed. |
