Colson:  In Daddy's Steps

I watched my little Grandson come flying in the door
He was so small, he was only four.
He looked at his Dad's old shoes laying there
He looked so serious, he really seemed to care.

He wanted to wear his Daddy's shoes
These were the ones he did choose.
I watched him try to walk and it was quite a sight
He thought it would work if he'd lace them up really tight.

I watched him as he tried again and again
His little foot would slip out and then.
He never gave up or felt sad
He just wanted to be just like his dad.

I have always prayed he'd follow down the same road
He is strong like his dad and can handle the load.
I knew it would be safe for him to wear his Daddy's shoes
For his Daddy's path was the right one to choose.

Then the door opened and a great big Hello Dad, Hello Boy
Then he'd hug his dad and shout with joy.
Both would smile their faces full of pride
They walked hand in hand with the same stride.

What 'cha been doing today My Lad.
I been wearing your shoes Dad.
They are a little big but when I'm a man
I'll wear your shoes, I know then I can.

Then they stopped and looked at each other hand in hand
He saw his son's tracks in the sand.
Then a prayer came back to Dad, you see
He remembered praying let my steps lead him to thee.
