The
Story Lady
There is
a story lady we know so very well and she lives in our attic. You see we
know this because every time we go to the attic there is her rocker and her
books all laid around. Only the children can see her so here is how the
story goes.
There was an old man
and woman who lived in a great big house, all they did was sit and look out
of the window at the children and laugh at their play. They both had always
wanted children but had none of their own, so they were Grandma and Grandpa
to all the kids in the neighborhood. They were loved by all who knew them.
They had the biggest yard and the children were allowed to play in it as
long as they wanted. The old lady always put kool aid and cookies on the
front porch in case the children got thirsty or hungry but always stayed
inside. One day the old lady got sick and she told the old man if anything
happen to her to put her in the attic in her favorite chair and there she
could live forever in story book land.
Well it happen, she
got real sick and told her husband she was ready and he took her favorite
blanket with children and babies toys all painted on it and took her to the
attic. Way back in a dark corner with a small table and her favorite rocking
chair he placed her to sit and went back downstairs. The day came for
the old man to go to heaven and he went knowing the old lady was just fine
in her favorite spot in the attic because he could hear the creaking noise
of the rocker back and forth. He placed a smile upon his face and went home
to be with Jesus. From up there he could look down and still watch over her.
Now the big house was
empty or so the towns people thought. A young couple came to look at the
house, they had a little girl and a little boy. The children ran up and down
the steps laughing and shouting, we love it Mom and Dad, please take it. The
house was beautiful just as the old couple had left it with toys and games
and story books laying everywhere.
So they
settled in loving the house and making very few changes to it. One night the
little girl and boy were in the bed. Creak, Creak, they heard the noise. The
little boy went into his Mothers room and ask if she had heard the noise.
But you see the story lady could only be heard by children , no grown ups.
He went back to his bed, the next night the little girl heard the noise and
went to her brothers room. "Johnny, she said did you hear the
noise the sound coming from upstairs? "Yes said Johnny to Lynn I hear
it, want to go check it out?
You see Johnny and
Lynn were very sweet children and had no fear in their life they knew they
were protected by angels. They got a flashlight and began the climb to the
attic. About the time they started to open the door their Mother called,
"Lynn and Johnny what are you doing? They ran back down the stairs and
jumped into bed. Their hearts were beating so fast, the excitement of almost
finding out what the noise was. When they woke up the next day they decided
to try one more time, they listened for the noise but heard nothing, but
could smell the smell of cookies. Time to go to school so they had to wait
such a long day feeling the excitement of the hunt through the attic.
Lynn and Johnny and
their best friend Kathy laughed and played all day . They decided to tell
Kathy what they had heard but she was to tell no one because no one could
hear the noise but them, they all laughed. Kathy said "there is a story
about the big house you moved into". "Really"? said Johnny
"what is it"? So Kathy told them of the story lady in the attic
that had been there for years and was loved by all the kids in the town.
They don't know what happen to her, she just disappeared but other kids had
heard the creaking of her rocker as she read the stories from her story
books.
The school bell rang
and Johnny and Lynn headed home, they could hardly eat supper for the
excitement, of having their very own story lady living in their attic. It
was time for bed and they waited till Mom and Dad were asleep and again got
their flashlights to head for the attic. Up the steps they went hearing the
creaking noise louder and louder as they got closer and then the sound of a
voice reading from a story book. They looked at each other and smiled.
"Creak"..."Creak"...back and forth the rocker rocked. It
was so dark and the noise came from the very back of the attic...closer and
closer, they felt a breeze and saw a light and a stack of books laying by a
rocking chair, the breeze from the window rocked the rocker and the wind
whistled a tune to a lullaby. They sat down by the chair and looked at the
beautiful blanket with children and toys all over it and closed their eyes
and fell asleep with dreams and the smell of sweet cookies on their mind.
Do you have a story
lady? Close your eyes and listen, only a child's heart and ears can hear the
sound.
